The Ring Billed Gull was back again at lamby Lake this morning. It still has a tiny bit of black remaining from the tailband and now shows a small white mirror probably on primary 10 Maurice
River Taff - Ad Bonaparte's Gull until 16.45 at least. Viewed from either Channel View Leisure Centre or Hamadryad Park, not much difference as failed the bread test and sat stubbornly in the middle. Also Little Gull and Med Gull.
River Taff, between Channel View and road bridge - ad Bonaparte's Gull - spent some time on playing fields and then flew back onto river before flying off into Cardiff Bay at 17.45ish.
At Hendre Lake this morning the parks men were in a boat clearing out rubbish and flushed at least a dozen snipe in the process but no sign of the Bittern. Whilst watching however a Short Eared Owl flew over and a Pergrine carrying prey, probably a pigeon. The Owl was a new species for this patch. Not feeling too good this am having picked up a cold on the weekend but patch tick made me feel better. Maurice.
News on the other Channel that the Hendre Lake Bittern is alive - so at some point there must have been 2 present - opinion was that the dead one with the Finland Ring on it had died a couple of weeks ago. Next candidate for the Holy Waters maybe? Smudger
The Bonaparte's Gull was present again this morning just upstream from the canoe slipway. Also 2 Meds, both second summer, one with a more complete hood.
Two drake and a single female Garganey were at the top end of Lamby Reen this afternoon. Very flighty and were eventuallly pushed off the reen into the side reens by dog walkers.
A single Brambling this morning with C300 Linnets and a few Chaffinches feeding in ploughed fields along the minor road from Castleton to Bassaleg ST246854 (Gwent). Also a couple of Red Legged Partridges. Someone asked recently where all the Linnets had gone- this may be the answer. Maurice PS fortunately no chuffers present this morning.
Sid, what were you doing on the golf course? Are you caddying these days? The Maesteg Open doesn't start until June and magic mushroom season isn't till the autumn? Or were you just playing around with Clive in the bunker on the 5th?
Sorry, but I was still getting over a demonstration earlier in the day of 'top' quality fieldcraft. I thought I'd seen it all but then I witnessed the stoning of an empty bush and then an attempt to flush a Cetti's Warbler by charging into a reed bed at full tilt. Awesome stuff!
Cardiff Heliport: Scaup (5, 3m & 2f), Swallow (1) & Willow Wbr. (1). Lavernock: very little birdwise, 100 Linnet the highlight, however the coastal path is now finished. On a Monday morning at Lavernock I expect to meet no one, today I meet 9 people & 2 dogs. With a nice easy to use path, litter, dog shit and grockles in general will increase 10 fold. Lets hope the birds and the birding doesn't suffer.

Bonapartes returned at approx 12:30just off the boat launching area upstream of the main viewing point.
