A ring-necked parakeet was at Insole Gardens this afternoon. The bird was clearly wild and a genuine vagrant (I suspect a combination of cold weather and the fact it's raining in Helsinki has resulted in the appearance f this bird. Incidentally, Insole Gardens is rapidly becoming the best place to see this species in Cardiff. It's also the best place in Cardiff to see Insole Court. The gardens can be tricky though, so be patient).

Cosmeston had 18 Teal, 3 Shoveller and 3 Gadwall this am. No sign of BT or FD.

The RN Parakeet continued to show very well at Insole Gardens this lunchtime (it's the bright green one my goat loving little friend, squawks a lot and crys out 'crunchy grvel, crunchy gravel). You can't miss it.

Also this lunchtime (it was a long lunch, ok) the Ring-billed Gull was at Lamby Lake or as I prefer to call it Trowbridge Gardens and Arboretum. It's just like Eden accept Eden doesn't have a car park full of dope smoking itinerants and people dressed head to foot in camoflague clothing throwing maggots into their pond and trying to catch fish you can't eat. I also think I saw Val Doonican there but that's another story.

Anonymous said...

Lassie was also there today and nearly caught a Cormorant. RBG did a fly past.

Anonymous said...

Hi Chaps,
please can you keep an eye out for a possible distessed whale sp off Cardiff,
ta very much Clive Ellis.

p.s.cause you can eat the fish from the lake, some are over 40lbs now and need to be kept in the bath for a couple of days to cleanse all the crap out, they still taste like s**t though.

For fucks sake is Portly trying to swim the fucking channel again. Will somebody tell him that there are other greggs the bakers than the one in Weston Supermare to buy a chocolate eclair, three cream doughnuts, a beef slice, two cream puffs, an apple turnover and 3 large saussage roll for his lunch.

Anonymous said...

And for gods sake don't tell Portly there are fish over 40lbs in there or he'll be down with his beer batter and a deep fat fryer as quick as you like. Ever seen somebody fishing with a JCB and dynamite?

Randal M Snowdrop said...

I knew this would happen. I said it. I did warn you. Just as The String of the Year vote ends in comes Clive with a classic contender and an almost certain winner. Now what are we going to do? I say we re-open the vote. This is clearly Clive's attempt to snatch the title from Portly (still haven't counted the oversees and postal votes though)and I don't think its fair of us to deny him the chance to win what is surely the pinnacle of anyone's birding career (even if it is a fish).

Anonymous said...

Have a look at Lamby lakes angling club site and you'll see how big those fish are, they've even got pet names for the realy big ones. Thanks for the nomination,i would also like to thank my mum and dad,my brother and sister and i must'nt forget the away teams mothers who cooked a lovely fish curry supper etc etc

Well i,m gutted for not getting string of the year with my fish, when does the next round start,i,ve never won anything before and this time i'm gonna give it my best shot.
Is there any possibility of a re-count,i,m not saying it was fixed or anything.

Alex said...

Sluice Farm/RGW - Snow Bunting still showing well at 4pm when myself and MW left site. Initially flushed from under foot just inside Gwent (sorry to swear!), it favours the muddy shoreline just before Meriwether's makeshift hide. See CBC 1 for pics of hide!

Anonymous said...

The Snow Bunting was still present this am in front of the RGW driftwood hide (see blog pic). Favouring the area between the rocks and the shoreline/spartina grass. This area is completely within East Glam. so it's in Cardiff (if you need it for your Cardiff UA list).
Also there Bar-tailed Godwit (1), Grey Plover (10), Golden Plover (2, seen flying from Sluice farm into EG.), Dunlin (150+) & Rock Pipit (7, highest count there for 14 years).
Clive Ellis, who refound it (SB) this am, also had a SEO before I arrived.
